Ferry collides with Viking Cruise Ship in the Port of Barcelona

Jan 12, 2018

Today, January 12, at the Port of Barcelona there has been a slight collision between the GNV Fantastic ferry and the cruise ship Viking Star operated by Viking Ocean Cruises. The collision between the two vessels happened at around 2 pm local time at the Terminal B, when GNV Fantastic ferry experienced engine problems during the undocking maneuver from the terminal. Shortly after the ferry moved aft and collided with the port side of Viking Star, which was moored at the time of the accident.

A video of the moment of impact has been posted on YouTube by a crane operator at the port facility. The video also shows that, as an emergency measure, the CNG Fantastic dropped the anchor to stop as much as possible the drift of the ship. No injuries have been reported on either of the ships and the damage is apparently minimal. At the moment the two ships are still at the port until authorities investigate the reasons for the collision, and assess the damage on both vessels. Viking Star was scheduled to depart Barcelona today on an 8 Days Western Mediterranean cruise to Marseille, St Tropez, Monaco, and Livorno before arriving in Civitavecchia on January 18.

According to cruise search engine Cruise to Ports, four cruise ships were moored in Port of Barcelona at the time of the accident: AidaPerla, Costa Luminosa, Viking Star and MSC Meraviglia.
