Fire Onboard Carnival Liberty

Fire erupted onboard Carnival Liberty on Monday when it was docked in the Caribbean island of St. Thomas no injuries among the crew and passengers.

The fire occurred in the "engine room" of the ship, Carnival said in a statement through the social network Facebook.

Carnival statement says "While docked in St. Thomas yesterday Carnival Liberty experienced an engine fire that was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system.  There were no injuries to guests or crew.  Guests re-boarded the ship yesterday evening. All hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. are fully functional and the ship’s normal array of activities, entertainment, dining options and programming are being offered.

A team of experts has been conducting a deeper technical assessment of the affected engine area and working with various authorities including U.S. Coast Guard and the vessel’s flag state.  While this process is ongoing, the ship remains alongside in St. Thomas.  Guests are able to spend the day ashore if they wish and the company is providing complimentary shuttle service to popular areas on the island along with a $150 per person shipboard credit."

The US Coast Guard reported that they were warned of this event, which is still under investigation, and as the ship was docked the landing could be done expeditiously, local media reported. Carnival Liberty, with a capacity of 2,974 passengers and 1,160 crew, was on his second day Caribbean cruise, after leaving on Sunday from San Juan, and it is unknown when will continue the seven-day cruise. Despite the fire, the cruise ship has power and web cameras installed on the bridge deck and continue to emit normally.

This event happens after the Carnival Triumph suffer in February 2013 a fire in the engine room, leaving adrift that huge ship in the Gulf of Mexico, with over 4,200 people on board.

The cruiser had to be towed for several days, in which passengers suffered a lack of power, which resulted in a shortage of hot food, air conditioning.

Coast Guard is investigators the incident to determine the cause of the fire. Carnival said in a statement that they hope the US Cosat Guard will authorize the resumption of operations of the ship to sail.
