Holland America Line's Koningsdam Sets Sail with High-Speed Starlink Internet

Submitted by kgnadmin on

Holland America Line has introduced SpaceX's Starlink internet service on its Pinnacle Class ship, Koningsdam, currently cruising in Alaska. Installed during a drydock in April, the technology has been operational for four weeks, delivering faster and more reliable Wi-Fi to guests and crew.

Starlink's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology is specifically designed to address the challenges of internet access in Alaska, where weather interference and geographical obstacles can disrupt traditional connectivity options. The enhanced bandwidth enables guests to share real-time experiences of exploring Alaska while allowing the crew to stay connected with their loved ones back home.

"For our guests and our team members, maintaining the connectivity they are accustomed to at home is an important part of the cruise experience," said Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line president. "Added bandwidth means our guests can share the joys of exploring Alaska in real time and our team can stay in touch with their loved ones back home."

Kathleen Erickson, Vice President of Technology for Holland America Line, expressed satisfaction with the initial feedback, highlighting the improved performance of email, social media, and internet calls. The positive response from guests and team members reflects the importance of maintaining a seamless connectivity experience during the cruise.

Starlink's Vice President of Commercial Sales, Jonathan Hofeller, emphasized the significance of high-speed, low-latency internet in the modern lifestyle and expressed excitement about the successful results achieved in Alaska. Holland America Line plans to equip additional ships with Starlink technology later this year, aiming to extend the service across its entire fleet.
