Injured Cruise Passenger Awarded with $ 21,5million in Damages

A man who suffered a minor brain trauma onboard M/S Amsterdam cruise ship operated by Holland America Line was awarded $21.5million in damages. James Hausman was hit in the head by a sliding- door while the ship was sailing to Hawaii in 2011.

James Hausman lawyer said that after the accident the ship's doctor told him he suffered a minor concussion. But the family says that after leaving the ship Hausman health condition was worsening. When they went to a doctor for a second opinion, he told them it was not a concussion, but a mild brain injury that caused seizures, memory loss and dizziness.

This led to a court to convict Holland America line to pay compensation estimated at $ 21 million. The cruise company has requested a reduction of the sentence and has been defended by saying that the passenger walked into the closing doors.
