A 39-year-old man was arrested and charged on Saturday after allegedly making a bomb threat against a cruise ship. The incident caused a disruption to both cruise operations and passengers.
The Singaporean police were alerted to the alleged bomb threat by a cruise operator on Friday at approximately 4:03 PM. The threat was reported on a cruise ship docked at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. Promptly responding to the report, local authorities, including the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and security personnel from Marina Bay Cruise Centre, immediately initiated extensive security checks on the vessel. Fortunately, no suspicious items or explosive devices were found onboard.
As a result of these additional security checks, cruise ship operations were temporarily halted, leading to a two-hour delay in the boarding process. Approximately 4,000 passengers were affected by the disruption.
Police offices launched an investigations, which resulted in the arrest of a 39-year-old man within just three hours of the reported bomb threat.
The suspect, identified as Neo Hui Ghim, faces up to seven years of imprisonment, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
According to court documents, the man allegedly sent an email to Resorts World Cruises' customer service department with the subject line "Bomb at Resorts World Cruises." In the email, he reportedly wrote, "Please return me back my money, else the ship will explode, and everyone will be dropped into the sea."
In light of the situation and the potential mental health concerns surrounding Neo's actions, he has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for a medical examination.
