MSC Cruises has introduced Opticruise, a groundbreaking technology designed to optimize navigation operations and reduce the environmental footprint of its fleet. Developed in partnership with OptiMeasy, a research company associated with the University of Genoa, Opticruise is an innovative model that enhances the planning of cruise ship itineraries.
Opticruise Innovation
The core of Opticruise lies in its sophisticated mathematical model, which considers crucial variables such as weather conditions, sea currents, and other logistical factors. This analysis enables the creation of safer, more efficient itineraries with reduced environmental impact. The primary aim of this technology is to maximize navigation efficiency while minimizing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative represents a significant opportunity for MSC Cruises and the entire cruise industry to align with ecological and sustainable practices.
Expected Impact on Emissions
Michele Francioni, the Chief Energy Transition Officer of MSC Cruises, indicates that the adoption of Opticruise will result in an estimated reduction of 10 to 15 percent in CO2 emissions due to improved fuel efficiency. This aligns with MSC Cruises' strategic goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The full benefits of Opticruise will be realized by 2026, when the MSC Cruises fleet will have expanded to 24 ships. The technology's integration into itinerary planning will facilitate future trips' optimization, supporting the company's commitment to sustainability.
The First Test on MSC Bellissima
The MSC Bellissima has been selected as the pilot ship to test Opticruise over a 12-month period. The ship will sail through 17 ports in the Mediterranean Sea, with its performance monitored for efficiency and fuel consumption. This testing phase aims to validate the system's functionality and gather valuable feedback from guests onboard, which will contribute to further enhancements. This initiative underscores MSC Cruises' leadership in the sustainable cruise sector, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious cruising.
