Norovirus outbreak on Celebrity Summit, more than 300 people sick

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) norovirus sickened crew and passengers aboard  Celebrity Summit sailing on a two-week Canada/New England cruise, that departed  from Bayonne, N.J. on Sept. 21.

CDC reports that 307 of 2112 (14.5%) passengers on board and 14 of 952 (1.5%) of the crew were stricken with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea due to norovirus

In response to the outbreak, Celebrity Cruise Lines and the crew aboard the ship have taken the following actions–increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and quarantine the sick passengers and crew in their cabins

The cruise ship is scheduled to return in Bayonne, New Jersey on 5 October where disembarkation plan for active cases, terminal and transport infection control procedures will be enforced.

Norovirus is a very contagious virus that can be passed on by infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. The virus symptoms are vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up.

The best way to help prevent norovirus is to practice proper hand washing, general cleanliness and avoiding handshake or touching public area surfaces.
