Yesterday the cruise ship Norwegian Joy skipped the scheduled call to Cozumel, Mexico and is now heading back to its homeport Miami. The reason for this is that the vessel has been experiencing a technical issue affecting its maximum speed, reported several passengers sailing on the Joy. The ship was near Cozumel when the decision to skip the port was announced.
Guests say that the captain made an announcement informing them that the ship is experiencing propulsion problems, however, they will be back in Miami on time, as per the cruise schedule. “We were informed that this has no effect on return, we will return as scheduled on Saturday to Miami,” one passenger said.
“From the ship is easy to see that only one prop is turning,” said another guest.
According to CruiseMapper the Norwegian Joy which has a top speed of 23 knots, is currently sailing at a reduced speed of 12 knots or 13.8 miles per hour.
Norwegian Joy departed Port Miami on March 12, on a 7 Night Caribbean voyage to Roatan, Harvest Caye, Costa Maya and Cozumel, which was canceled. Once the ship arrives in Miami it will need to be inspected and the propulsion issue fixed. Hopefully, this will not affect Norwegian Joy's next sailing.
