The small village of Teahupo'o in Tahiti is set to host the surfing events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Due to limited space on land, the Olympic organizers have arranged for the cruise ship Aranui 5, to accommodate the various delegations, offering a suitable alternative that meets the athletes' needs.
Most delegations attending the surfing events will be housed on the Aranui 5, which will be moored in Vairao Bay, just twenty minutes from the Olympic site. Athletes will be transported to the event location by sea shuttle. This arrangement is expected to provide comfortable and convenient accommodation for the athletes.
Sixteen delegations, including Canada, Japan, and Mexico, will stay on the cruise ship. However, five other delegations—Brazil, France, Italy, Australia, and the United States—have decided to make their own housing arrangements.
The French Polynesian government has financed the chartering of the Aranui 5 at a cost of €3,737,480. The rental period for the cruise ship is from July 17 to August 8, encompassing the duration of the surfing events, which are scheduled from July 27 to 30. However, the events may be postponed until August 5, depending on weather conditions.
