Passenger Rescued After Jumping Overboard from Cruise Ship in Baltic Sea

An 18-year-old passenger was rescued alive after jumping overboard from the cruise ship AIDAnova in the Baltic Sea, reports Morgenpost.

The “man overboard” alarm was sounded at around 2:00 a.m. while the ship, carrying 6,600 guests and crew, was en route to Copenhagen.

The vessel immediately halted and turned back in challenging conditions with wind force six. The captain called on guests to assist in the search by shining cell phone flashlights from their balconies, while lifeboats deployed spotlights. The combined effort of crew and passengers led to the man being located and recovered alive. He was responsive and received medical treatment onboard.

A full muster and headcount followed, with the all-clear given around 4:00 a.m. The itinerary then resumed. AIDA Cruises confirmed the incident but released no further details.

According to Danish police, the passenger, who was heavily intoxicated, had joked earlier about leaping into the water before acting on the remark.
