Princess Cruises and Fincantieri mutually agreed to delay the delivery of the highly anticipated Sun Princess. This decision came just two weeks before the ship was supposed to set sail for the first time. They haven't given a clear reason for the delay or when the ship will be ready.
A spokesperson for Princess Cruises said the delay was because of unexpected problems at the shipyard in Italy where the ship is being built. Unfortunately, this means the first planned voyage from Barcelona on February 8th had to be canceled. They haven't said when the ship will be ready to sail.
John Padgett, the head of Princess Cruises, apologized for the inconvenience caused by the delay. He acknowledged that people were looking forward to the ship's launch and said they were sorry for the disappointment.
"We understand that this news is disappointing, and we share in that disappointment. We recognize the anticipation that surrounded this sailing, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this cancellation causes," said Padgett.
Sun Princess is supposed to be a big deal for Princess Cruises, with capacity for over 4,000 passengers and crew. It's part of a pair of new ships ordered by Carnival Corporation, set to be the biggest in the Princess fleet. These new ships are much larger than the ones built before by Fincantieri for Princess Cruises.
