A protest by Extinction Rebellion activists briefly delayed the docking of Celebrity Eclipse in Amsterdam on Sunday morning. Around 30 demonstrators in kayaks and inflatables blocked access to the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam at 6 a.m., displaying banners such as “Cruise is polluting our planet.” Authorities intervened after two hours, arresting at least five protesters. The ship eventually docked and continued its itinerary.
The environmental group, known for targeting cruise ships, said the action aimed to highlight the industry’s impact on climate and local communities. They vowed to continue similar protests until cruise tourism is banned from Amsterdam and the Netherlands.
Amsterdam has taken a tougher stance on cruise tourism in recent years, limiting calls to 100 annually and planning to relocate the terminal outside the city center. Despite cruise passengers accounting for just 1.5% of total tourism, the sector is frequently cited in debates over overtourism. By 2027, only ships with shore power will be allowed to dock.
