Three Australian passengers aboard Quantum of the Seas were medically evacuated in two separate rescue operations during the ship’s eight-day South Pacific cruise. The maritime gendarmerie patrol boat operated by the Armed Forces in New Caledonia, coordinated the evacuations on Wednesday, February 19, transferring all three individuals to Médipôle for urgent medical care.
The first distress call came Tuesday evening as Quantum of the Seas approached Noumea. By 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, the patrol boat had intervened, swiftly transferring the first patient to shore for medical attention.
Just as the cruise ship was preparing to depart New Caledonia’s lagoon, a second emergency was announced. The maritime pilot on board alerted the Operational Surveillance and Rescue Centre (COSS) of two additional passengers requiring urgent care on land. After a remote medical consultation the patrol boat was redeployed, completing the second evacuation by 10:30 a.m..
All three passengers were safely transported to Médipôle, where medical teams took over their care. Quantum of the Seas has since resumed its voyage.
