Two Crew Members With Chemical Burns Airlifted From Celebrity Summit

Submitted by kgnadmin on

Two crew members from a cruise ship off the coast of Virginia Beach were evacuated by the Coast Guard to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after suffering chemical burns.

As stated by the Coast Guard, the two injured were on board the Celebrity Summit cruise ship approximately 69 miles from shore. The cruise ship contacted the Coast Guard Fifth District Command Center, which sent the crew of the Elizabeth City MH-60 Jayhawk Coast Guard helicopter to transport the injured. A doctor from the cruiser was also taken to the helicopter.

"The Coast Guard trains daily for situations like this," said Mr. Ryan Langley, a Fifth District Coast Guard Command Center operations watchstander. "Being that there are so many hazards on the water, we remain always ready so that we can respond effectively to answer the public's call."

The injured are currently being treated for chemical burns, and according to the Coast Guard, further medical care was needed. The identity of the crew members, and their onboard position, as well as the extent of the injuries, have not been made public.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the crew members and we wish them a speedy recovery.
