MSC Cruises has announced that the company has integrated SpaceX's Starlink technology on two-thirds of its fleet. As of now, 15 out of 22 ships in the MSC Cruises fleet have been outfitted with Starlink technology, following successful bandwidth and data traffic trials conducted in 2022. This technology promises faster internet speeds, enhanced WiFi service in cabins and public areas, reduced latency, and lower operational costs. The first ship to receive this upgrade was MSC Magnifica in December 2022.
The integration of Starlink is a response to the growing onboard bandwidth consumption, driven by an increase in connected devices and the usage of various applications by guests. This technology ensures MSC Cruises can meet the current and future digital demands of its passengers and crew, alongside the technical requirements of the fleet.
Currently, the ships equipped with Starlink include MSC Divina, MSC Euribia, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Lirica, MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview, and MSC Virtuosa. Additional ships, MSC Opera and MSC World Europa are scheduled for this upgrade within the month, with five more ships anticipated to join this list before the summer 2024 season.
EXPLORA I, part of MSC Cruises’ sister company Explora Journeys, has also been equipped with Starlink, setting the stage for forthcoming luxury ships in this new line, including EXPLORA II, which will feature this enhanced connectivity from its maiden voyage in August 2024.
