Viking is celebrating a historic return to China, as the Viking Yi Dun completed her inaugural voyage from Shanghai to Hong Kong (Shenzhen). These new itineraries explore China’s coastline, offering rare access to lesser-visited destinations that only Viking guests can experience—a first for international travelers. From September to November, the 930-guest Viking Yi Dun, formerly known as Viking Sun, will operate these exclusive sailings. The ship is a sister vessel to others in Viking’s award-winning fleet, showcasing the same renowned design and exceptional service.
“China, with its ancient history and rich culture, is a remarkable destination that many travelers have yet to fully explore,” said Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO. “We’ve introduced China to our guests through Yangtze River cruises for 15 years. Now, we’re thrilled to offer these new domestic voyages, allowing visitors to experience this incredible country in the unique Viking way.”
The launch of these new itineraries was celebrated in Shanghai, where local officials joined guests in a festive event. Cultural performances onshore and onboard offered a taste of China’s rich traditions. As the Viking Yi Dun made her way through ports like Zhoushan, Dongtou, Pingtan, Xiamen, and Shenzhen, she was welcomed with enthusiasm from local communities. Feedback from guests was overwhelmingly positive:
“To enter this country, see its treasures, and engage with its people in such a guided way has been extraordinary,” shared Cheryl W. “I’m leaving eager to learn more and return again.”
Paul S. reflected, “Thanks to Viking’s team, we’ve had such a wonderful experience both on and off the ship. I feel privileged and even more curious about China.”
“What I’ve enjoyed most is the people—both our fellow travelers and the people of China,” said Marion D. “They’ve been so kind and gracious, showing me the humanity of this incredible country.”
Donald M. added, “Viking makes it so easy to see the fascinating areas of China. I’ll definitely recommend this trip to my friends.”
