Volkswagen Faces New $50 Million Lawsuit for Cheating Ship Engines

After the global engine emissions scandal with software used to cheat on emissions tests the German automaker Volkswagen is facing more lawsuits. This time Europe's leading commercial vehicle, engine and mechanical engineering company MAN is facing $50 million in compensation. MAN, company owned by Volkswagen, producing marine engines for ships and cruise ships is facing court case for having rigged tests for ships engines manufactured a decade ago for Norwegian shipping company IM Skaugen. IM Skaugen states that the specifications of six engines which they bought by MAN were misleading and requires compensation for increased fuel consumption during engine life, estimated at 30 years.

VW currently owns 75% of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, although it was not MAN shareholder when the company produced the engines subject of complaint several lawsuits over contracts signed with IM Skaugen.

IM Skaugen decided to publicize the case, filed in July in a court of Singapore, after finding similarities between the management of MAN on tests of ship engines property of VW and the response given by the German manufacturer after the biggest scandal in its 78-year history, for falsifying emissions from diesel vehicles.

This lawsuit can trigger avalanche of compensations for other companies using MAN engines in their ships if they find discrepancies in the fuel consumption and emission. MAN incorporated many engines for the biggest cruise ship companies.

Viking Ocean Cruises also implemented MAN engines together with Alfa Laval, which provides the exhaust gas cleaning systems to dispose of sulfur oxide in their latest cruise ship Viking Star. 

The words largest cruise line Carnival Cruise Lines has signed contract with MAN in 2014 for construction of five large-bore diesel engines with diesel-electric propulsion system. 

Royal Caribbean newest ship Anthem of the Seas runs on 14V MAN 48/60CR engine. Royal Caribbean has signed contract with MAN for supply of engines for Ovation of the Seas.
