Passengers aboard Wonder of the Seas got an unexpected show as the ship was leaving Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. During the departure, one of the ship's gangways slipped while being loaded back on board, dangling for a moment before crashing into the water below.
The incident happened on Saturday, August 1, and was captured on video by passengers aboard Allure of the Seas, which was docked nearby. The footage has since spread across Reddit and other social media platforms.
The video shows crew members loading the gangway back onto the ship after guests had already reboarded. As Wonder of the Seas slowly pulled away from the pier, a forklift on the dock appeared to be assisting with the loading process. Moments later, the gangway tipped, briefly hung in the air, and then dropped into the water.
Fortunately, no one was on the gangway when it fell, and there have been no reports of injuries or damage to the ship.
While some online questioned why crew members did not try to stop it from falling, attempting to catch or hold a heavy piece of equipment like a gangway could have been extremely dangerous. Crew members and dock workers instead stepped back and allowed it to fall safely into the water.
The incident did not appear to affect the cruise. Wonder of the Seas continued its three-night Bahamas itinerary with a scheduled call in Nassau before returning to Miami on August 3, and no delays were reported following the mishap.
