American Passenger Dies Aboard Island Princess During Crete Visit

A 69-year-old American passenger died aboard Island Princess during the ship’s visit to Souda, Crete, on Wednesday, October 28, delaying its departure while arrangements were made with local authorities.

According to Greek news outlet Parakritika, the man’s wife found him unconscious in their cabin. The outlet reported that his death was attributed to natural causes, although it did not provide a specific medical finding.

Parakritika reported that arrangements were being made for the passenger’s body to remain aboard for eventual repatriation to the United States. The necessary procedures and approvals involving the foreign-flagged vessel delayed its departure from Souda. The report did not specify how long the delay lasted.

Island Princess had arrived that morning carrying 2,104 passengers.

The Princess Cruises ship was nearing the end of a 25-night transatlantic voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Piraeus, the port serving Athens.
