Fire in the Engine Room on Grand Princess

The cruise ship Grand Princess operated by Princess Cruises suffered a significant lost of power due to switchboard failure in the engine room. Incident happened 20 miles off the coast of Hilo, Hawaii on Monday at around 5:30 a.m. local time. Report says that there was smoke on the ship shortly after the announcement from the bridge of a small fire in the engine room.

Currently there is limited power supply, air conditioning and the ship is using emergency lighting. The fire was quickly extinguished however Grand Princess is operating on three diesel generators and slowly moving towards Hilo. Princess cruises said all 2,592 guests and 1,095 crew are safe and no one is injured. Crew areas are particular sensitive when there is limited air-conditioning because this is only source of fresh air especially in the crew cabins located bellow the sea level.
