The 227,000 gross ton Harmony of the Seas will be 20% more energy efficient than the other two Oasis-class sister ships, Royal Caribbean revealed at a briefing for the news media. Thanks to the improvements in technology over the past decade energy efficiency is achieved in many areas of the cruise ship.

Energy efficiency is boosted on Harmony of the Seas thanks to improvement in hydrodynamic design, the new type of engine and other enhancements, Royal Caribbean said at the press conference at the shipyard STX France.

The ship’s hull shape was redesigned lowering the fuel consumption and air lubrication technology has been installed creating microscopic bubbles on the hull, reducing friction with the water in order to improve speed and efficiency.

The ship uses state-of-the-art propulsion system and the latest fuel efficiency engines. Waste heat recovery systems are installed to minimize energy usage. Traditional light bulbs have been replaced with LED lighting.

Compared to the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas will be 33cm (13 inches) longer and nearly one meter (three feet) wider making it the world’s largest cruise ship.
