The cruise ship Norwegian Sun came in contact with a small iceberg due to thick fog during its voyage to Alaska. As a result, the vessel was forced to skip a port of call and proceed to Juneau to assess the damage.
The 78,309 gross tonnages Sun was scheduled to arrive in Skagway, one of the northernmost ports on its current 9-night voyage from Seattle, at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday, June 26, 2022.
However, from 4 pm local time, it is stated that the ship is still much south of Skagway, south of Juneau, turning towards the state capital. Juneau is approximately 100 miles southeast of Skagway.
A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told Cruise Hive, “On June 25, 2022, while transiting toward Alaska’s Hubbard Glacier, Norwegian Sun was engulfed in dense fog, limiting visibility and causing the ship to make contact with a growler. The ship remains fully operational and is currently en route to Juneau, Alaska for evaluation.”
“Additional information will be provided as appropriate.” – Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson.
According to the monitoring data, the sun in Norway is currently on its way to Juneau, which means that the transfer of Skagway is probably excluded.
The expected arrival in Juneau is around 5:00 p.m. Local time.
At this moment, there is no official assessment of the damage to the Norwegian Sun, but the ship continues its journey to Juneau, although at a much lower speed than usual.
Passengers on board reported a very strong fog on Friday, which would cause a significant slowdown of the ship as a security measure.
The ship may have hit the local ice in such a way that it damaged the propeller, engine or hull. Growlers, small, low-lying icebergs that can be the size of a piano or a truck, are relatively common in this area passengers in the sun in Norway reported trembling and rattling sounds that may have been related to the ice crash confirmed by the cruise company.
Such damage would require inspection before the ship can resume normal speed. Divers in Juneau can inspect the boat and determine if it is damaged or needs repair.
