A German passenger has died after falling from the cruise ship Costa Smeralda onto the dock at the port of Civitavecchia, according to reports by Italian media.
The tragic incident happened in the early afternoon of February 6, in full view of emergency responders and firefighters who were already on site for a separate medical emergency. A middle-aged man reportedly fell from the ship’s side to the pier, while the vessel was docked.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fall may have been deliberate. Authorities later stated that no further onboard inspections were necessary, and the ship was allowed to depart.
According to firefighters, the alarm was raised at around 2:00 p.m. Emergency teams from Civitavecchia were responding to several incidents linked to adverse weather conditions and were assisting with the landing of a rescue helicopter at Dock 12.
The helicopter had arrived to evacuate another passenger who had fallen ill on board. Just moments after it touched down, a loud bang drew the attention of responders. A man had fallen from the ship’s side onto the dock.
Rescue teams and onboard medical staff immediately began resuscitation efforts in an attempt to save his life.
Despite their efforts, the man’s condition was critical from the outset. An emergency doctor who arrived shortly afterward was only able to confirm his death.
In a statement, Costa Cruises confirmed the death of the passenger and expressed its sympathy to the family.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of a German guest today at the port of Civitavecchia,” the company said. “According to an initial reconstruction, the guest voluntarily jumped onto the quayside while the ship was in port for normal operations.
“The crew intervened immediately and activated all emergency procedures. The relevant authorities were promptly informed and are conducting the necessary investigations. The captain and the company are fully cooperating and offering all possible support to the guest’s family. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to them at this difficult time.”
Later in the evening, at around 8:30 p.m., Costa Cruises announced that authorities had completed their checks on board and that the vessel was cleared to resume its voyage.
