The first day of May marks international labour day, and this week we will try to focus on the importance of the crew members on the cruise ship. Indeed, we all need essential reminders about the actual value of all seamen around the world. Those brave people are willing to sacrifice their presence to create a better future for their loved ones. 

Working on a cruise ship is a complex and challenging job that often involves dealing with high-stress levels. Unfortunately, one of the most difficult aspects of this work can be the managers we work with. Some of them can be biased, untrained, and arrogant, making things even more challenging. As crew members, our primary goal is to create unforgettable memories for our guests. When we succeed in doing so, the sense of fulfillment we feel is truly remarkable.

The dry dock is used for vessel construction, maintenance, and repair. It can be filled with water or emptied as required, and most shipyards have one or more dry docks of various sizes to carry out production or other activities. More extensive docks can be used to manufacture and repair massive vessels, such as container or ocean-going cruise ships. The facility is kept free of water to facilitate the work of operators.

Cruise ship work has many beautiful moments like any other job on land. Depending on the job title and position, sometimes happiness comes more, sometimes less. Ultimately, happiness is our perception of reality, the way we see things around us. Even if we are in the most beautiful place in the world, we can still focus on the negative perception and the opposing perspective. The beauty that gives us happiness is, most of the time, in our own eyes, the way we see the world around us.

Stress is sometimes good. Even when you work in an extremely difficult environment like a cruise ship, pressure can help you stay focused, energetic, and able to meet new challenges in the workplace. It keeps you on your toes during a work performance or alerts to prevent ship accidents or costly mistakes. But in today's hectic world, and especially on the cruise ship, the workplace too often seems like an emotional roller coaster.

I remember one funny story when I was working on a cruise ship sailing out from Galveston, Texas. It was 2 am, and there was some emergency signal on the ship. Just because there is an emergency does not mean it involves you as a crew. One lady, a crew member, was running with her carry-on baggage at the muster station. Other crew members and officers were looking at her in disbelief; she thought the ship was sinking, packed her luggage, and kept running to her Muster Station.

The Human Resources position plays a vital part in any business organization. This position is maybe the most vital in the cruise ship industry since crew members are away from their families for 6-10 months.

Generally speaking, if you are an extrovert, you will adjust much easier to the culture on the cruise ship. The ability to seek every opportunity to talk and create conversations is crucially important on the ship, especially when working in front of the house and dealing with guests.

In response to growing concerns about mental health on cruise ships, there have been several recent additions to the small body of research on seafarers' mental well-being, which has sought to examine the prevalence of mental health issues among seafarers, review the support that exists and offer recommendations on how to protect the mental health of seafarers.

When you are at home before your first cruise ship assignment, you don't know how many different things are going to happen when you board the ship. Everything you probably heard from those employment agencies back home is only the good side of the story. When you pack your luggage and finally set to join the cruise ship for the first time, just take a deep breath; in the end, everything will be ok. Be brave and prepare yourself for a unique, beautiful, challenging journey.
