As a unique region, one of the many in need of preservation was chosen by the brothers' John and Patrick McEnroe , American tennis legends, to play tennis in the middle of Antarctica aboard a cruise ship. The aim is not chasing any record, but an initiative that came out in need of awareness on climate change. This event is scheduled with the themed Atlas Ocean Voyages 11-day cruise on the World Navigator, departing on the 22nd of February.
"I'm excited to travel to Antarctica and play with my brother, Patrick, in the first-ever professional tennis match on the seventh continent, and to help raise awareness to the challenges facing one of the most remote and amazing places on the planet," said John McEnroe in a statement. "This will be an epic adventure and a one-of-a-kind expedition."
Patrick McEnroe added, "I have always wanted to explore the amazing landscapes of Antarctica, and how could I miss out on playing the first-ever pro tennis match there against my own brother? I can only promise one thing, a McEnroe will win!"
The McEnroes will be accompanied by 11 participants on this Antarctic cruise, which we could define as "green". The World Navigator’s debut in Antarctic waters was in 2021. It has been designed to reduce emissions by 75% compared to classic cruise ships thanks to the use of a hybrid engine , and to limit the impact on balances marine biodiversity thanks to the use of propulsion systems (hydrojet) that allow you to navigate a short distance from the local fauna, without causing a disturbance.
All guests on Atlas sailings to Antarctica are provided with a private charter flight from Orlando to Ushuaia, Argentina, where they will board the new World Navigator. During the trip, some of them will have the opportunity to play tennis, dine and spend time on excursions with the McEnroes. All guests onboard must be fully vaccinated.
