Thirty years ago, Rommel Pineda began his career as a young deck boy with dreams and much to learn. This October, he marked three decades with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, looking back on a journey that would eventually take him to the captain’s chair.
The company marked the anniversary highlighting Pineda’s progression through the deck department and the relationships he has built with crew members and passengers.
During his three decades with Fred. Olsen, Pineda has served across the company’s ocean-going ships, holding positions including ordinary seaman, third officer, second officer and chief officer.
His permanent promotion to captain came in 2018. Fred. Olsen describes the appointment as making him the first Filipino captain to command a cruise ship under an international flag.
In his own anniversary message, published October 4, Pineda recalled joining as a young deck boy with ambitions and much to learn. He described the years that followed as a period of challenges, sacrifices and experiences that shaped both his career and his personal life.
Pineda thanked Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Bahia Shipping Services Incorporated for supporting his development and entrusting him with increasing responsibility. He also acknowledged the colleagues, mentors and friends who helped him along the way.
“I am deeply honored and proud to have dedicated 30 years of my life to this company,” he wrote.
The anniversary drew congratulations from former colleagues and passengers, with several praising his approachable manner and leadership.
Among them was former captain Erik Blom, who recalled working with Pineda aboard Black Prince. Blom described him as a capable and dedicated officer and welcomed seeing his career progress to command.
Passengers also shared memories of conversations, bridge visits and voyages under his leadership, adding personal tributes to the company’s recognition.
Fred. Olsen said Pineda particularly enjoys connecting with the people aboard its ships. He values the welcoming atmosphere of the company’s smaller vessels and the friendliness of both guests and crew.
For young Filipino seafarers hoping to advance through the ranks, Pineda’s career provides a visible example of progression from an entry-level deck position to command, built over decades of service and professional development.
