Three cruise passengers were taken to hospital in Madeira on Wednesday morning, October 14, after emergency services responded to medical evacuations at the Port of Funchal.
Madeira newspaper Diário de Notícias said the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters and Funchal Municipal Firefighters sent two ambulances to assist with the transfers. The response took place around 7 a.m., as cruise ships arrived in port.
The newspaper identified Celebrity Apex and Saga Cruises’ Spirit of Adventure as the ships arriving that morning, from Tenerife and Portsmouth respectively. However, its account does not clearly establish whether all three passengers came from one vessel or whether both ships were involved.
No details were provided about the passengers’ ages, medical conditions or the hospital receiving them.
The two ships were visiting Madeira during cruises linking the United Kingdom with Portugal and the Canary Islands.
Celebrity Apex is sailing an 11-night round-trip voyage that departed Southampton on October 7 and is scheduled to return on October 18. Celebrity Cruises’ published itinerary lists calls at Porto’s Leixões port, Lisbon, Gran Canaria and Tenerife before the October 14 visit to Funchal. Following Madeira, the ship is scheduled for a sea day and a call at Vigo on October 16 before returning to Southampton.
Spirit of Adventure departed Portsmouth on October 10 for Saga’s 15-night “Contrasts of the Canaries” cruise. Funchal is its first scheduled port call after three days at sea. The itinerary then continues to La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, followed by Lisbon on October 22 and a return to Portsmouth on October 25. Saga’s published schedule lists the Madeira visit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The medical transfers were carried out while the ships were alongside in Funchal.
