We are deeply saddened to report the passing of a 60-year-old Filipino crew member who fell ill onboard a cruise ship while it was calling at port of Chios, Greece.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said the crew member, who worked as an engine room welder, became unwell during the morning of July 16 while the Marshall Islands-flagged cruise ship was alongside in Chios.

Emergency medical services (EKAB) responded to the incident, and the crew member was transported by ambulance to the Chios General Hospital "Skylitseio." Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Greek authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into the incident, while the Chios Port Authority has ordered an autopsy through the Chios Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death.

The Coast Guard did not identify the cruise ship involved. However, based on publicly available ship-tracking data, the only Marshall Islands-flagged cruise ship calling at Chios on July 16 was Azamara Onward. The vessel is currently operating a 10-day Eastern Mediterranean itinerary from Piraeus (Athens) to Istanbul.

The circumstances surrounding the crew member's illness have not been disclosed, and authorities have not said that any foul play is suspected.
