Cunard Crew Member Faces Extradition to Bermuda Over Sexual Assault Allegation

A Filipino cabin steward accused of sexually assaulting a passenger aboard Cunard's Queen Anne faces extradition to Bermuda after the High Court overturned an earlier decision blocking the proceedings.

In a judgment delivered on November 2, Lady Justice Andrews and Mr Justice Bourne allowed Bermuda’s appeal in the case of Arvie Oporto. The case must now be sent to the Home Secretary to decide whether to order extradition.

According to the judgment, a female passenger reported that the crew member had raped her in her cabin on August 13, 2025. The Bermuda-flagged ship was sailing between Scotland and Iceland during an Iceland cruise.

Bermuda seeks his return to face a sexual assault charge. He was arrested at Southampton docks on August 17, 2025, and remained on conditional bail at the time of the judgment.

The appeal centred on jurisdiction over alleged offences at sea. The High Court found that Bermuda could prosecute the alleged conduct and that England and Wales would have equivalent jurisdiction in corresponding circumstances involving an English-registered ship.

The ruling concerns extradition eligibility and makes no finding of guilt.
